Can someone with a narcissistic pattern break down? Yes. They cry. They fall apart in ways that look like heartbreak. You can watch the whole collapse and still misread it.
People say they feel nothing. Or they say the crack must be remorse. Neither one is quite right. The tears can be real and still point at the self they are trying to keep standing, not at what they did to you. Skip "do they feel" and look at what the feeling is stuck to.
The pattern runs on a self that looks solid and is not. Attention and control hold it up, plus a public story that has to stay clean. Take those away and the structure shakes. From outside, the shake can look like grief.
Most of the time the pain is attached to the image, the role they play, or the fact that they cannot reach you. It is rarely attached to the harm. If the crying starts when they lose the audience, that tells you something. If nothing changes after the crying, that tells you something too.
Three things tend to shake the structure. You do not have to get cruel, and you do not have to stage a scene.
You stop playing the part. No speech, no courtroom. You just stop making them the center of the room. There is no audience and no repair scene, and there is no argument left to win. To a pattern that needs supply, that quiet is not peace. It is a drop in status. They still exist. They are just not being fed.
The mask gets seen. That does not mean a public takedown. Someone notices the gap between the story and the behavior. The self they sell only works if other people keep buying it. Once the room starts blinking, the panic is about looking ordinary in front of other people. A small remark from a third person can land harder than years of you saying the same thing in private.
You get well without them. Sleep comes back. Friends stay. Work holds. Your body stops bracing for the next swing. They can stand your anger, because anger still includes them and keeps them in the story. An ordinary good day does not.
Peace lands harder than a speech for that reason. You did not take revenge. You left the job they assigned you. If they break down after that, it is not proof they finally understand you. The system ran out of fuel.
Protect the distance. Do not explain the distance to them. Your life does not have to mean something to them. It can just be your life.
