Your resistance is not to the task. It is to the imagined weight of finishing it. Five minutes is too small to fear. Your brain cannot build a convincing case against it.
Once you start, a second thing happens. Motion creates momentum. The hardest part of any task is the transition from stillness to action. You have already paid that cost. Continuing is cheaper than starting was.
Most of the time, you will keep going. Not because you forced yourself, but because the resistance dissolved the moment you moved.
And when you do stop at five minutes, you still win. You showed up. You proved to yourself that you are someone who starts. That identity compounds.
How to use it
Pick the task you have been avoiding. The one sitting in the back of your mind, taxing you.
Strip it down. Not "write the report." Open the document. Not "clean the kitchen." Put one dish in the sink. Not "go to the gym." Put your shoes on.
Set a timer for five minutes. Start.
When the timer goes off, check in honestly. Do you want to continue, or do you want to stop? Either answer is acceptable. The rule is not a trick to make you work for an hour. It is a tool to make starting possible.
What to watch for
You will be tempted to skip the timer. Don't. The container matters. Five minutes with a boundary is different from "a few minutes" without one.
You will be tempted to raise the stakes. "I'll do thirty." Don't. The power is in how small it is. Keep the bar low enough that refusing looks absurd.
You will be tempted to use it once, feel proud, and not use it tomorrow. Don't. This is a daily tool, not a one-time hack.

Discipline is not built in the hours. It is built in the seconds between stillness and action. Every time you start, you strengthen the part of yourself that can be relied on. Every time you avoid, you strengthen the part that runs.
